Setting up a static IP connection

Does this apply to me? This is for connections with a static IP, which most of our business customers use. Sign in to portal.incentre.net, open My Services, click your internet service, and look for a Static IP Settings section showing an IP address, subnet mask, and gateway. If you see that, follow this guide. If your service shows Internet Login Details with a username and password instead, see Setting up your router for PPPoE. If you see neither, your connection uses DHCP, so see Setting up your router with DHCP.

What you will need

From the Static IP Settings section of your service: your IP address, subnet mask, and gateway. You will also use our nameservers (below) for DNS.

Set up your router

  1. Connect your router's WAN (or Internet) port to your modem or fibre box with an Ethernet cable, then power everything on.
  2. Open a web browser and go to your router's setup page, usually 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1, and sign in with the router's admin login.
  3. Find the WAN or Internet settings and set the Connection Type to Static IP (it may be called Fixed IP or Manual).
  4. Enter your IP address, subnet mask, and gateway exactly as shown on your service.
  5. Set the DNS servers to our nameservers, below.
  6. Save, then reboot the router and give it about a minute to connect.

Where the setting lives on common routers

  • TP-Link: Network (or Advanced) > WAN, set WAN Connection Type to Static IP.
  • ASUS: WAN > Internet Connection, WAN Connection Type = Static IP.
  • Netgear: Internet, "Does your Internet connection require a login?" = No, then set IP Address to "Use Static IP Address".
  • D-Link: Internet > Manual setup, My Internet Connection is = Static IP.

DNS / nameserver settings

A static IP connection needs its DNS servers entered manually. Use our nameservers:

  • Primary nameserver: 198.161.96.1
  • Secondary nameserver: 204.209.46.1

Troubleshooting

  • Enter the IP address, subnet mask, and gateway exactly as shown, with no extra spaces.
  • Make sure the connection type is set to Static IP, not PPPoE or DHCP.
  • If DNS does not resolve, re-check the nameserver addresses above.
  • Still stuck? Open a support ticket from the client area and we will give you a hand.
