Setting up your router for PPPoE internet

Does this apply to me? Only if your internet service shows login credentials. Sign in to portal.incentre.net, open My Services, click your internet service, and look for an Internet Login Details section. If you see a username and password there, follow this guide. This usually applies to DSL and Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) residential and business connections. If instead you see a Static IP Settings section, see Setting up a static IP connection. If you see neither, your connection uses DHCP, so see Setting up your router with DHCP.

Before you start

You will need your internet login details from the client area:

  1. Sign in at portal.incentre.net.
  2. Open My Services and click your internet service.
  3. Look under Internet Login Details for your username, password, and (if your plan includes one) your IP address.

Set up your router

The wording differs slightly between router brands, but the steps are the same:

  1. Connect your router's WAN (or Internet) port to your modem or fibre box with an Ethernet cable, then power everything on.
  2. Open a web browser and go to your router's setup page, usually 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1. Sign in with the router's admin login (often printed on a label on the router itself).
  3. Find the WAN or Internet settings and set the Connection Type to PPPoE.
  4. Enter your username and password exactly as shown in the client area. They are case sensitive, so copy them carefully.
  5. Save, then reboot the router and give it about a minute to connect.

Where the PPPoE setting lives on common routers

  • TP-Link: Network (or Advanced) > WAN, set WAN Connection Type to PPPoE.
  • ASUS: WAN > Internet Connection, WAN Connection Type = PPPoE.
  • Netgear: Internet, answer Yes to "Does your Internet connection require a login?" then choose PPPoE.
  • D-Link: Internet > Manual setup, My Internet Connection is = PPPoE.

DNS / nameserver settings

Your connection sets DNS automatically, so you normally do not need to enter anything. If you ever need to set DNS manually, use our nameservers:

  • Primary nameserver: 198.161.96.1
  • Secondary nameserver: 204.209.46.1

Troubleshooting

  • Double-check the username and password for typos. They are case sensitive.
  • Make sure the connection type is set to PPPoE, not DHCP or Static.
  • Power-cycle both the router and the modem or fibre box, then wait a minute.
  • Still stuck? Open a support ticket from the client area and we will give you a hand.
